Chart Your Own Course

A Personal Story
As someone in my first job out of university, I value the amount of responsibility I am given in my role. Our managers place a huge amount of trust in us to direct our work and develop our own conclusions. It is very rewarding to realise that you can personally have an impact on the outcome of a project and on the client involved. We are given a lot of leeway to take initiative, which has been particularly apparent in the social impact work I have done. Recently, a colleague and I developed an intensive mentoring program between BCG consultants and disadvantaged students at Debney Park Secondary College. The partners and senior staff have been incredibly supportive and we have complete ownership over the program, with the flexibility to run it as we see fit. It's great for us to be able to use our skills to give back to the community, and I think we will be able to make a tangible difference in the lives of those students.

There is no 'typical' career at BCG; knowing that I chart my own course is very important to me.

A Personal Story

The hardest part of any university degree is knowing what to do with it. Given my background the obvious choice was to pursue a career in investment banking or commercial law. However, it was ultimately a career with BCG that enticed me the most.

Apart from being able to learn from some of the brightest minds in business, a key draw card for me was BCG's emphasis on career development through diverse experiences. Unlike other companies, BCG gives you the opportunity to work on a wide spectrum of business problems, giving you the ideal platform from which to decide where you want to take your career.

BCG is also very supportive of you taking control of your destiny. There is no 'typical' career at BCG, and knowing that I chart my own course and will not be forced to follow a prescribed career path was very important to my decision to join.

Background
Shiv joined BCG in 2009. He holds Bachelors in Business and Law (Hons) from the University of Technology in Sydney. Throughout university, he worked as a tutor in finance and economics, and also gained experience in various commercial law firms.
James
BCG provided me with an opportunity of unmatched career development while allowing me to stay in New Zealand.
James
Associate, Auckland
A Personal Story

When I graduated from university with a degree in mechatronics engineering, I came to a cross-road in my life. I had to decide whether to move to the United States to develop my career in the robotics sector or stay in New Zealand due to personal circumstances. BCG has provided me with an opportunity of unmatched career development while allowing me to stay in New Zealand until I am ready to go abroad.

Having been at BCG for six months now, I have noticed that a part of the firm’s strength lies in the knowledge of our global experts. However, we are all frequently given opportunities for constructive dissent and to express our own ideas. In fact, I am expected to come to the table with well-grounded opinions. I believe that it is this culture of challenging the status quo, even if you are a junior Associate with no business background, which has provided me with the most personal development.

Background
James holds a Bachelors degree in Engineering (Mechatronics) from Auckland University. He joined BCG in 2008.
