Through BCG I have had a wealth of opportunity to drive social impact, from sustainable economic development in PNG to establishing the Australia New Zealand School of Government. However, spending 12 months in Cape York supporting Indigenous development stands out the most. I led a diverse range of projects supporting Gerhardt and Noel Pearson and various Cape York Indigenous organisations, working with secondees from corporate and philanthropic Australia. We looked at Indigenous tourism, construction businesses, welfare-to-work, health and connections with land, as well as developing models for corporate and philanthropic support of Indigenous development in other parts of Australia. From running meetings in communities two days drive from Cairns, to discussing business plans with aspiring Indigenous tradespeople, I left with invaluable skills and experiences and hopefully contributed to the ongoing Indigenous development journey. What I learned in Cape York contributing to Indigenous development I will use forever: in business, in advising government and in my broader life.
