What has surprised me most has been the real flexibility I have had in managing my career and being a mum to two energetic little boys.

Principal, Sydney
A Personal Story

I joined BCG as a fresh-faced undergraduate not really sure what consultants do! I was attracted by the idea of constantly having new experiences–whether it was through the clients I would work with, the problems we would tackle or the cities I would work in. Eight years down the track, BCG has delivered this–and more. What surprised me most has been the real flexibility I have had in managing my career and being a mum to two energetic little boys. For the past three years BCG supported me working part-time and enabled me to minimize the travel required. While it is a juggle, for me it is important to get time at home with my children whilst I continue to develop my career. Having a good network of other working mothers has been valuable support for me. In addition to fascinating local case work, I’ve experienced an 18-month secondment at a subscription television company and worked in London. I’ve been able to steer my career into industries I am passionate about, especially media, and I am still excited and inspired with the talented colleagues and clients I get to work with.

Background
Anna graduated from the University of Technology, Sydney with a Bachelor of Business with Distinction. She joined BCG in 2000.
Angus
Having a career that constantly opens up new opportunities AND a family life seems like a great deal to me!
Angus
Principal, Sydney
A Personal Story

Since joining BCG I have had a multitude of interesting, challenging opportunities. I have worked in almost a dozen countries across all the major continents on topics from exporting wine to developing rail infrastructure. Outside of casework I run the Operations Practice Area for Australia and New Zealand, which means I get to drive the business forward as part of the wider Asia Pacific and global leadership teams.

Managing work-life balance is always tough for ambitious people, but BCG's respect for individuals makes it possible. I manage to see my family regularly during the week and I rarely work at the weekends. Having a career that constantly opens up new opportunities AND a family life seems like a great deal to me!

Background
Angus holds a BA (Honors) in Geography from Cambridge University and an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management. He joined BCG in 2002.

It was an unmatched opportunity for me to think strategically and make real change happen for our clients.

A Personal Story
The case that, for me, epitomises the challenges that BCG offers was helping a large airline establish its own low-cost carrier – something other airlines had attempted before, but never successfully. We were involved from the inception, helping the client write the business case and board paper. I was then seconded into the business as acting CFO through the build and launch phase. It was an extraordinary experience helping a client go from problem (eroding market share) to solution (building a new business) – and all in an accelerated timeframe. The result was an unmatched opportunity for me to think strategically in order to make real change happen for our clients.
Background
Paul has a Bachelors of Arts and Law from the University of Queensland and a Masters of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School. He joined BCG's Sydney office in 1998.
Catriona
The support and flexibility BCG gives women to help them establish and prosper in their careers sets the firm apart from many other employers.

Principal, Melbourne
A Personal Story
I was attracted to BCG by the opportunity to learn and develop in a fast paced environment, working with switched on, inspiring people. I had so much to learn–I didn’t know what I didn’t know, as the saying goes – but I was keen, and BCG’s apprenticeship model was the ideal place to start. I learned by doing, working on real business projects with real clients, coached by some brilliant managers. Today I am leading a team of fifteen consultants on a major corporate merger integration. I am enjoying the leadership role and am proud of the results we have already achieved and the impact I've had personally. While it can be difficult managing career demands with raising a young family–I have two small children–the support and flexibility BCG gives women to help them establish and prosper in their careers sets the firm apart from many other employers.
Background
Catriona joined BCG in 1996 with a BA in Geography from Melbourne University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. While at BCG, Catriona went on secondment with British Airways and on a leave of absence to build a film production company.
