Frequently Asked Questions
Who is BCG?
The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is a leading management-consulting firm. We specialise in providing strategic advice to the senior management of companies around the world.
What skills and characteristics are BCG looking for in its people?
BCG looks for people with academic results in the top 5-10% of their year, as well as work experience and extra curricular activities that indicate drive and motivation. Superior communication and analytical skills, along with the will to succeed, are also required.
Do I need a business-focused undergraduate or postgraduate degree to join BCG?
No, we employ people from a wide range of disciplines including arts, medicine and engineering as well as traditional business-focused disciplines.
What is a typical career path for someone who has just completed an undergraduate degree and joins BCG?
An undergraduate joins BCG as an Associate. After two years, outstanding Associates will be promoted to Senior Associate and given the opportunity to go on secondment to another organisation for 12 months or perhaps undertake an MBA sponsored by BCG. On return, they will typically be promoted to Consultant. Promotion to Project Leader, Principal and Partner and Managing Director then occur at approximately 2-3 year intervals.
What type of work will I do in my first year or two at BCG?
Associates will typically spend time analysing data and preparing materials to support the communication of this analysis. Case work may also involve researching industry trends and interviewing managers at the client. Communicating findings at team meetings is an essential skill for an associate.
When is BCG recruiting this year?
Our major campaign for undergraduates, postgraduates and MBA students begins in February of each year with the intention that people start work the following year. However, we welcome applications for positions at BCG throughout the year. For more details please see the recruiting page.
How do I apply for a position with BCG?
Please prepare an online application including a cover letter, and a copy of your résumé and academic transcripts. We will acknowledge receipt of your application and inform you of its progress.
What is the interview process for BCG, and how can I get tips to help me?
Our interview process consists of three rounds, each comprising two interviews. In a typical interview we will spend time focusing on your résumé, followed by a case study. The case study will involve a business problem and will give you a flavour of the work we do. Please see our global website for tips on interview preparation. Towards the end of an interview you will be given an opportunity to ask the interviewer some questions about BCG in general.
If I join BCG, will I get an opportunity to travel?
Yes, there are numerous opportunities for successful consultants to travel. This may vary from a short interstate assignment where you fly home on weekends, to a 12-month transfer to one of our international offices.
I've heard that management consulting is stressful. What is the downside?
Clients come first in our business and thus we often face long hours and demanding travel schedules to meet their needs (management consulting is not a nine-to-five job!). The work we do also involves significant ambiguity and can be incredibly challenging. However, we recognise the effort consultants put into their work and reward them accordingly.
