A Day In The Life Of

6:30am Wake up.  Hit snooze a couple of times, then scramble to get organised when I realise I’ve overslept.

7:00am Go to the gym; run on the treadmill and watch some terrible breakfast-time television.  Have a hot shower, quick change, and walk up the street to the office.

8:15am Attend staff breakfast – we have one every second Friday, with guest speakers, presentations from case teams and other items of interest.  It’s a great way to catch up with people and see what everyone’s up to.

9:30am We have a case team meeting to see where everyone’s up to for our presentation next Tuesday.  The project leader runs through the draft materials and we each report on progress when our slides come up.  We also debrief on the week gone by, and flag any issues or commitments we have in the coming week, so we can plan meetings going forward.

11:00am I have about seven slides in the presentation on Tuesday.  I need to plan how I’ll finish them before then, so I write a list of the information I still need and analysis I still need to do.

11:15am I make a couple of phone calls to members of the client organisation to ask for information I will need for the slides.  I receive some documents by email straight away, others will send me data on Monday, and I arrange to meet with one client that afternoon.

11:45am I scan the documents I’ve been given and write up a list of questions to ask the client this afternoon.   I want to make sure everything’s covered, so I email the questions around to the rest of the team to see if there’s anything they want to add.  One of my teammates sends me a couple of extra points.

12:30pm I have lunch with my BCG buddy, who is a Senior Associate.  We try to catch up once a month, just to see how everything’s going – work, life, the universe; the usual!...

1:15pm I have to cut lunch a bit short and grab a taxi down to the client.  I know exactly where I’m going because we spend quite a lot of time there Mondays-Thursdays, but I haven’t met this particular person before.  The meeting goes well and the client is really eager to help out – I decide they could be a good person to contact again for information.

3:00pm Get back to the office.  Somehow the day has disappeared!  I grab a coffee and settle in for some serious work – don’t want to be hanging around late tonight!

6:00pm I look up from my desk and suddenly it’s after six.  But I’ve managed to complete a few of the slides for Tuesday and have my requests out for the rest of the information, so I feel pretty good.  I poke my head into my project leader’s office to check in before the weekend.  We have a quick chat about the slides and what else needs to be done.  I go back and update my to-do list for Monday.

6:30pm It’s Friday, and I have a few drinks and snacks with people from work in the common room.  Then I get changed and go out with friends in the city – I love Fridays!
