A message from Gaurav...
Like many of my colleagues, joining a consulting firm straight out of University offered me the prospect of a flexible career owing to the broad range of clients we deal with at BCG. Reflecting on my four years with the firm, I now recognise that BCG not only offers flexibility in the work that we do, but also the pathway we can follow.
In pursuing my career, I had what I thought to be separate aims of; wishing to learn a broad set of business skills in the private sector and wanting to work on public sector/policy issues. To my surprise, consulting has provided the flexibility to combine these two ambitions. For example, in 2002, I took up an offer to work on one of our pro-bono projects for the Indigenous communities of Cape York. This entailed business analysis combined with public policy outcomes. Building on the relationships I had made there, I returned in 2004 on a one year BCG secondment to work in-depth on implementing a new public policy organisation. This was an inspirational experience made possible both by the skills acquired from consulting, and the flexibility to take time off. BCG secondment programs are a popular option amongst Consultants who wish to utilise their consulting skills on specific passions.
As a result of the secondment experience and my own future interests, I decided not to follow the traditional MBA path and instead take up further studies in the field of Economic Development, a decision supported by BCG. It is important to know that while BCG offers a structured career path, it is also are able to tailor the pathways to suit the diversity of interests and backgrounds of individuals present in the firm.
On returning to BCG, I have taken the opportunity to do further work in Indigenous communities and take a temporary transfer to London for personal reasons.
A flexible and tailored career was a big value proposition when I first made my decision to join BCG. Four years in, it remains just as much a drawcard.
