A Day In The Life Of Matthew...
6:55am I hate my alarm. I generally set it halfway across the room so I can’t just hit snooze. I get up, hit snooze then I go back to bed.
7:05am Already running late for the day, I struggle out of bed, pull on some running gear and jog to work.
7:45am I take the elevator up to BCG’s office, get changed and eat some breakfast.
8:05am I head out of BCG and down to the client's offices. At the client I check my email and respond to a few questions that my Project Leader has sent through overnight. I also have to deal with a few questions about the BCG ski trip to Mount Hotham which I am helping to organise.
9:00am I get started on my module of work. I am researching international best practice in relevant processes to help identify areas where the client could make improvements to their current system. I search through BCG’s internal knowledge management system as well as external databases and information provided by the client.
1:00pm I pack up my computer and grab some lunch on the way to one of the client’s frontline sites.
1:30pm I meet a manager from the client at the site. It’s good to see the systems we are trying to improve firsthand. After some digging in a musty old room full of files I find a really useful set of hard copy data.
4:00pm Feeling quite proud of my discovery I return to the client's offices where I debrief with my Project Leader and his counterpart from the client team. I return to work on my best practice module.
6:30pm I head back to the BCG office with my Project Leader. On the way we discuss some potential options for the client which have emerged from my research.
7:00pm I pull together some of the most relevant case studies into a draft set of PowerPoint slides which we will present to the client at the end of the week. My Project Leader has a quick look over them and suggests some ‘areas for improvement’.
7:45pm I pack up my documents and write myself a list of tasks to work on tomorrow. I decide to leave my computer at work for the evening which is always a liberating feeling. I get a taxi to meet my girlfriend for dinner in Prahran, then head home to get some rest.
