A Day In The Life Of Melinda...

7:15am Alarm goes off and my mind immediately starts pondering what’s for breakfast. I catch the morning news, grab a quick shower then jump on the bus, using the time to scribble down my to-dos for the day.

8:00am Today my first stop is BCG. I turn my laptop on then head straight to the coffee machine. It takes me two attempts to make a decent latte (and that’s why I’m not a barista!), before sitting down to sort through my emails.  I respond to a couple of MBA friends, and turn my attention to the day ahead.

8:45am Pack up my things, say good morning to a few colleagues and head to the client.

9:00am My current case is a little unusual in that I’m a team of one working directly for the client. They have a tight deadline and I’ve been brought in to help them complete a piece of work in a couple of weeks. They’re a great group of people and I feel like part of their team. My first task for today is to review a presentation they’ve written and make some suggestions on how they can improve their logic and flow.

10:30am I’m on the phone to our Knowledge Group at BCG, asking for their assistance in gathering some data we need urgently. They reassure me they’ll do what they can and will get back to me ASAP.

11:00am I review some reports that have come through and start putting the pieces together. We’re trying to size up the market for a product, and the assumptions we make will be critical to the strategy proposed.

1:00pm Lunch with the client in a café downstairs. I take 30 minutes out to chat with them about weekend plans and discover we share a mutual friend.

1:30pm My afternoon is filled with back-to-back meetings. We meet with a broker, speak to a research specialist and then sit down to discuss our assumptions with respective business unit managers. One meeting gets a little heated, but we find some common ground and agree to loop back with them in a couple of days.

6:45pm I look up at the clock and wonder where the day has gone! I do a quick check of what needs to get done tonight and what can wait till tomorrow. I decide to eat dinner with my fiancé and finish things up from home.

9:00pm Turn the laptop back on and work for another hour. I send a quick congratulatory email to a colleague who’s just been promoted, before its time to call it a night.
